Anaesthesia — what people actually worry about
Reasonably. Most anxiety about surgery is anxiety about the animal not waking up.
We use an anaesthesia machine rather than injectable-only anaesthesia, so depth can be adjusted through the procedure and reversed quickly. Oxygen support runs throughout, and recovery happens in an ICU cage where the animal is watched until properly awake.
For older animals — or any case where the examination gives us pause — we run bloods first. Kidney and liver values change how anaesthesia is dosed, and our lab is here, so it doesn't add days.
Before the operation
- No food from the night before; water until morning
- Bring any medicines the animal is on, in their packaging
- Tell us about previous anaesthetics, reactions, or heart and breathing problems
- Come early enough for us to examine and weigh before starting
Afterwards
You'll go home with pain relief, any antibiotics needed, written instructions and a date to come back.
The cone stays on. Owners underestimate how strictly the animal must be kept from jumping, and how determined it'll be to reach the wound. Call us if you see swelling, discharge, bleeding, or the animal won't eat by the second day.
What we don't do
We don't have ultrasound or ECG in-house, so cases needing those are referred — and we share the X-rays and lab work so nothing is repeated. We also don't do monitored overnight hospitalisation; animals recover here through the day and go home in the evening. If a case genuinely needs continuous overnight care, we'll tell you and point you to it.
